Handling Internet Activism During the Russian Invasion of Ukraine: A Campus Network Perspective

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 raised an enormous wave Internet activism and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks launched with the help common users across world. In this article, we describe events first days after from perspective cybersecurity incident response team Masaryk University Czech Republic. We observed hundreds intentionally participating DDoS against Russia university’s network. campus network faced only minor issues terms service unavailability, but alerts flooded team. Two dimensions are highlighted. First, large-scale unexpected direction were highly unusual brought technical challenges monitoring intrusion detection. Second, hacktivism still violates network’s use requires to communicate very carefully community.
